Molecular Design of Functional Ionic Liquids

Typical ionic liquids consist of inorganic anion and organic cation. A ready modification of organic ions is a great advantage for ionic liquids toward their functionalizations. To render such functionality for ionic liquids, one of the effective approaches is an introduction of characteristic structures for self-assembly in a view of the construction of organized ion conduction pathways. Novel self-assembled imidazolium cation having long alkyl chains or taper-shaped nonpolar groups are prepared. The ionic liquids with the cations show one-dimensional or two-dimensional ion conduction in a columnar or smectic phase.
