Apparatus for Simultaneous Measurements of Raman Spectrum and Heat Flow

Some materials, e.g., ionic liquids and polymers, have a big thermal history during the heating and cooling processes.

In such a case, it is difficult to obtain a vibrational spectrum (molecular-level information) at a certain phase condition, particularly near the phase transition temperature, from the individual measurements of vibrational spectrum and heat flow. In this apparatus, we can simultaneously obtain the information of heat flow (bulk) and molecular vibrations (molecular-level).

Raman Spectrometer: HoloLab 5000 (Kaiser Optical Systems, Inc.). Light source: GaAlAs diode laser; Wavelength: 785 nm (0.072 nm: <1 cm-1); Power: 10 – 400 mW; Frequency range: 100 to 3450 cm-1; Frequency resolution: 4 cm-1.; Focus: ~5.7 mm form the lens.
Calorimeter: Lab-made calorimeter using semiconducting thermoelectric module. Temperature range: 120 to 420 K; Heating and cooling rate: 0.5 – 30 mK/s; Noise level: ~5 μW.
